Fishing the Greenbrier Valley: An Angler's Guide, the most recently published of Dr. Smith's four books about fishing in regional lakes and streams, is packed with handy and important knowledge, designed to enhance the fisherman's appreciation for, and understanding of, the challenges and opportunities embodied in the sport throughout the lakes and streams of the Greenbrier Valley region. An Associate Professor of English at Bluefield State College, Smith has also written books that serve as an angler's guide for regions that include the Roanoke Valley, New River Valley, and Shenandoah Valley.

Smith's Fishing the Greenbrier Valley was compiled following lengthy research and includes a comprehensive map of the Valley's stocked and wild trout streams, with advice for both spinning and fly-fishing. “Though the Greenbrier Valley is well known for its excellent smallmouth bass and trout fishing, many anglers don’t realize that white bass, catfish, and walleye can also be found there,” he noted. This book provides information on driving directions, float-fishing, and detailed descriptions of the different species of fish found in the Greenbrier Valley. Published by the University of Virginia Press, Fishing the Greenbrier Valley can be purchased through Amazon.com and at selected regional bookstores.

The proprietor of Greasy Creek Outfitters, a fishing guide service and retailer in Floyd, VA, Smith observed, "It's gratifying to combine a love for fishing in this region with my academic focus, writing, and author this series of books through a reputable publishing entity.”

Smith will participate in a book-signing ceremony at the Campus Corner Bookstore (BSC Bluefield campus) on September 30, 2005, 11 a.m.-noon. He will also appear at the Greenbrier Valley campus of New River Community and Technical College on October 19, 5 p.m.-6 p.m., for a brief discussion of the book, Q&A session, and book-signing.
