BSC Faculty Member's Work Chosen as Authoritative Source for "Celtic Religion"

(Bluefield)—When the search engine “Answers.com” considered its authoritative source for information on “Celtic Religion,” it selected Dr. Garrett Olmsted, a Professor of Social Sciences at Bluefield State College. Two books written by Olmsted, Celtic Art in Transition During the First Century B.C. and Gods of the Celts & the Indo-Europeans, are the most recent of his many monographs and books on the early Celts.

“’Answers.com’ has been mentioned by the Wall Street Journal as a one-of-a-kind site,” Olmsted noted. “Unlike other search engines that identify numerous sites sharing the same search phrase or word, ‘Answers.com’ provides only a single answer or website for information when a question is submitted.”

He has written more than 30 papers relating to the early Celts, including first-time translations of Gaulish and Archaic Irish poetry, of which he and only a handful of other scholars in the world are capable of deciphering. To develop his books and articles on the Celts, Olmsted had to learn to read 20 different languages, including Sanskrit, Gaulish, Greek, and early Germanic text.

A featured speaker at each quadrennial Celtic Colloquium and International Society of Prehistory, Olmsted has detailed his research at conferences in Wales, Belgium, Scotland, Italy, France, Ireland, and Slovakia. “This range of research and experience has proven useful in the ‘Comparative Religions” course I teach at Bluefield State College, and it has led to the development of another course (‘History of Science & Technology’) at BSC,” he observed.
