“Fishing the New River Valley” Workshop, Feb. 5 at BSC

(Bluefield)--If you love fishing, a one-day workshop is almost as good as being on the lake, and it will make your time more productive and enjoyable when you arrive at your fishing destination. "Fishing the New River Valley," a February 5 workshop at Bluefield State College features an avid angler-author and the host of a syndicated television fishing show. The three-hour workshop begins at 1 p.m. in the Tierney Conference Room, Dickason Hall (fourth floor), BSC.

Dr. Michael Smith and Captain Forest Pressnell will direct the workshop. Smith, author Fishing the Roanoke Valley, Fishing the Shenandoah Valley, and Fishing the New River Valley, will discuss the challenges and opportunities embodied by the sport in the lakes and streams of the New River Valley. Smith, whose fourth book on the subject, Fishing the Greenbrier Valley, will be ready for distribution later this year, is a BSC faculty member and is the proprietor of Greasy Creek Outfitters, a fishing guide service and retailer in Floyd, VA. He has also been invited to the March 17, 2005 "Festival of the Book" in Charlottesville, VA, where he will participate in an outdoor writers' panel.

Pressnell hosts "The Outdoor Sportsman," a television show that has aired on the Sportsman's Channel." "I'll be sharing information about the different fishing destinations and Forest will detail the types of species available and strategies for catching them," Smith explained.

Registration fee of $45 includes a copy of Presnell's video (Fish Species/Fishing Techniques) and Smith's book (Fishing the New River Valley: An Angler's Guide). Individuals interested in additional information and/or reservations are asked to contact Libby Belcher, Community Development Specialist (304-327-4390 or, by e-mail, ebelcher@bluefieldstate.edu).
