Education Students at GVCNRCTC Graduate Through BSC

One of the many cooperative baccalaureate programs offered on the Greenbrier Valley Campus of New River Community and Technical College by Bluefield State College is the elementary education program.

Graduating from Bluefield State College, but taking most of their class work on the Greenbrier Valley Campus in 2005 were Craig Rife, Union; Julie Wood, Lewisburg; Amy Kirk, Ronceverte; Heather Pyne, Fairlea; John Reed, Alderson; Jerry Laufer, Lewisburg; Kathy Feury, Gap Mills; Sherry McLaughlin, Lewisburg; Ashley Miller, Alderson; Jason Campbell, Union; Kathy Byers, Renick; Heather Nutter, Quinwood; Jim Edwards, Williamsburg, and Terri Bucklen, Lewisburg. Dr. Lucie T. Refsland, professor of Mathematics, is the coordinator of the student teaching program on the GVCNRCTC;

Education related courses offered on the GVCNRCTC in the fall, 2005, semester include Methods in Teaching Arts and Science in Social Studies, English, Mathematics, and Science; Basic Skills Development; Foundations of Education; Child/Adolescent Growth and Development; Instruction and Technology; Teaching and Learning; Grammar or Teachers; Adolescent Literature; Math for Early and Middle Grade Teachers; and Teaching Reading and Language Arts.

“With the Greenbrier Valley Campus of New River Community and Technical College offering the associate (first two years) of a program and Bluefield State College offering the third and fourth years, but on the GVC, we have what would be considered a ‘seamless curriculum,’ which makes it better and more convenient for the students of the Greenbrier Valley,” emphasizes Roger Griffith, director of the GVCNRCTC. “In cooperation with Bluefield State, we are able to offer several baccalaureate programs like the elementary education program.”
