Board of Governors Take Oath of Office; Hold First Meeting at NRCTC

The newly appointed Board of Governors of New River Community and Technical College took the oath of office and held their first official meeting Thursday (March 3) at the Beckley campus.

With special guests Judi Almond of Beckley, a member of the WV Council for Community and Technical College Education and a member of the Raleigh County Board of Education, and Nick Bassett, associate professor of business and computer science and president of the Faculty Senate of NRCTC, witnessing the proceedings, each member both recited and signed the oath.

The members of the Board of Governors are William Sherwood, Princeton; Edward Knight III, Lewisburg; David Nalker, Lewisburg; Robert Farley, Princeton; Mary Igo, Summersville, representing the classified employees; Leslie Baker, Beckley; Vickie Nutter, Craigsville; William Blake, Lewisburg; Marilyn Kiddle, Hinton, student representative; Gerald Hough, Summersville, faculty representative; Marilyn Leftwich, White Sulphur Springs; and Kay Carpenter, Webster Springs.

Elected as chairman of the BOGNRCTC during this first meeting was Lewisburg attorney Edward Knight and Mercer County educator William Sherwood was elected vice chairman.

The Board appointed a search committee to conduct the search for the new president. Heading the committee will be Chairman Robert Farley of Princeton and Vice Chairman David Nalker of Lewisburg.

Interim President Dr. Felcia B. Wooten Blanks of Beckley displayed the official documentation of its full and independent accreditation from the Higher Education Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

She also presented each member of the former Board of Advisors with a plaque of appreciation for service to NRCTC.

In a special announcement by Greg Shrewsberry, director for Economics Enhancement and Occupational Skill Development for NRCTC informed the Board of a newly arranged partnership between an unidentified local industry, the Mercer County Vocational-Technical Center and NRCTC to provide training classes which may lead to employment in the local area.

Dr. Blanks also announced that Congressman Nick Jo Rahall (D-WV) will be the guest speaker at the second annual NRCTC Commencement and Graduation program May 13 at 7 p.m. at Tamerac in Beckley and that Lizabeth Rogers of Alderson, assistant professor of POST, will head the new committee to conduct the three year self study.

New River Community and Technical College, with campuses in Beckley, Bluefield at Bluefield State College; Greenbrier Valley in Lewisburg, and Nicholas County in Summersville, serves the central and southeastern WV as well as the neighboring Virginia counties.
