Heaggans, Neal, and White
Present Diversity Workshop
at Concord University

(Bluefield)—Dr. Raphael Heaggans, Director of Multicultural Affairs at Bluefield State College, Roderick Neal, Associate Professor of Psychology, and Dr. William White, Director of Undergraduate Leadership Studies at Mountain State University, presented a diversity workshop at Concord University recently. The program, “Educating All of One Nation,” was underwritten by a Social Justice grant application submitted by Prof. Neal and funded by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission. Approximately 70 teacher education students participated in the activity.

Heaggans’ presentation, “Teaching U.S. Cultures: Representing Children’s Cultural Perspectives in Curriculum,” addressed the justification of integrating a diverse curriculum in the classroom to assist meeting the goals of the No Child Left Behind Act.

White, a diversity consultant for 30 years, addressed the topic “Egocentism” and focused upon gender, race, age, poverty, ethnicity, and socioeconomics across curriculum.

Neal’s presentation, “Identifying At-Risk Youth,” included information about incidents of school violence, psychological and sociological variables, predictor variables for delinquency, and what teachers can do within curriculum to assist such youth.
