(Bluefield)—The New River Gorge Bridge is the longest span bridge in the Western Hemisphere, and recently the bridge and its scenic overlook provided the venue for a Bluefield State College Honors College cultural enrichment program. The students and Honors College advisor Dr. Patrick Muldoon arranged the visit through the West Virginia Department of Highways.

Dr. Muldoon, Associate Professor of Chemistry at BSC, noted, “The experience gave our students the opportunity to learn about the design of the bridge, the problems building it and the problems maintaining it. They were also able to walk under the bridge, which was 876 feet above the Gorge floor. The view was breathtaking and a little unnerving.”

Danielle Hawes, an Honors College student, added, “We had great weather and took part in something that added another dimension to our educational experience.” Earlier this year, the Honors College students traveled to the Kennedy Space Center and NASA headquarters.

Participants in the Honors College must maintain a grade point average of at least 3.75 and rank among the top three percent academically of all students at BSC. “I really enjoy the Honors College,” Hawes continued. “It is challenging and we have a diverse group of students that has become close-knit, almost like a family.”

Students interested in receiving additional information about the BSC Honors College are encouraged to contact Dr. Muldoon (pmuldoon@bluefieldstate.edu) or BSC Registrar Ray Mull (rmull@bluefieldstate.edu).
