( Bluefield)— A trip to the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, “Ground Zero,” and the Empire State Building highlighted a recent academic enrichment trip to New York City for students in the Bluefield State College Honors College program. Participants in the program have maintained a grade point average of at least 3.75 and are among the top three percent academically of all students at BSC.
“The students experienced a wide range of activities and gained a greater appreciation for the cultural diversity of New York City,” noted Susan Mann, a BSC visiting faculty member and a chaperone for the trip. “The education from this trip provided ‘real world’ exposure across the curriculum.”
Students also traveled by limousine to a performance of “Phantom of the Opera,” dined at Planet Hollywood in Times Square, toured Chinatown, Soho, and Little Italy, attended the New York Rangers-Atlanta Thrashers’ National Hockey League game. Honors College participants Lee Rose, Jr., and Susan Wilkins, along with Mann, appeared on the “Today Show,” and met weather personality Al Roker. Other BSC Honors College participants who took part in the NYC trip included Patience Hall, Corey Flanagan, Tabitha Pack, Cynthia Barnes, Jessee Farmer, Abdul Nasiru, and Danielle Hawes.
Throughout each academic year, Honors College students at BSC undertake a variety of initiatives designed to provide leadership opportunities, rigorous academic experiences, and community service. Students interested in receiving additional information about the program are encouraged to contact Dr. Patrick Muldoon (pmuldoon@bluefieldstate.edu) or Mr. Ray Mull (rmull@bluefieldstate.edu).
