( Bluefield)—The Bluefield State College Foundation’s “Outstanding Classified Employee” awards for 2006 were presented to Tom Harrison and Deidi Rose during the annual “BSC Employees Appreciation Day” program at the College. Both Harrison, the College’s Director of Career Planning and Placement, and Rose, the College’s point of contact for several Enrollment Management programs, received a plaque and BSC Foundation monetary award of $500 at the ceremony.

BSC President Dr. Albert Walker made the presentations. He saluted Harrison, noting, "During his 14 years as a member of the Bluefield State College family, Tom’s commitment to making education possible extends from our students’ admission to Bluefield State College to their graduation and beyond. Each year, he coordinates a six-college job fair on campus, and as a one-person office, he handles details involving visits to campus by numerous recruiters. He has implemented several innovative placement initiatives and he’s a willing volunteer on college committees.”

Walker recognized Rose for her service to the College "in a positive, student-focused manner. “Deidi is regularly willing to go the extra mile, make the extra call, and give extra effort. She has been a quietly competent professional who has been a source of stability at the College for nearly 13 years. She is the College’s point of early contact for many students and their parents, and she is a calming, reassuring presence.”

By a vote of their peers, BSC retirees Clifford Neal and Darlene Buchanan were awarded “Classified Emeritus” status, with all appropriate rights and privileges.

Additionally during the awards ceremony, BSC employees were recognized upon the completion of five, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 & 40 years of service to the institution, and special appreciation was extended to more than 20 individuals.

Last week, the College held a retirement reception to honor Alvin Lester (Professor & Department Head/Civil Engineering Technology), Remona Finney (Assistant Registrar), and Dr. Alma Bennett (Assistant Professor/Speech). These individuals have provided this institution with distinction and excellence for nearly 70 years of combined service as skilled and caring members of the College community, and we extend our best wishes to both upon the occasion of their retirement," Walker noted.
