( Bluefield)—The Bluefield State College student organization “Minorities on the Move” has announced details of its Black History Month activities. Residents of the region are encouraged to attend and participate, noted Terry Thompson, BSC Educational Outreach Counselor/Multicultural Advisor, and the student organization’s advisor.
The first program features Bluefield (WV) Mayor, the Reverend Garry Moore, who will deliver a speech on February 11 (noon) in the Harris-Jefferson Student Center. The program also includes performances by the “Grace and Mercy Dance Team,” Ms. Nateese Brown, and the Bluefield Community Male Chorus. A reception will follow the program.
A “Taste of Soul” luncheon will take place on February 16 (11 a.m.) in the Hebert Gallery/Harris-Jefferson Student Center. Dr. Howard Wade, an adjunct faculty member at BSC, will deliver the featured address. The author of several published works on African-American history, Dr. Wade has taught at the middle school, high school, community college, baccalaureate college, and graduate school levels.
Several members of Minorities on the Move will also attend the “Dynamic Displays in Diversity Summit” at the University of Charleston, February 24-25. “This event is designed for students of color and their allies,” Thompson noted. “The workshop will encourage leadership, empowerment, and networking opportunities.” The two-day summit will also include information on topics including Hip Hop, Greek Life, Career Development, and Self-Empowerment.
