( Bluefield)—Area small businesses hoping to grow, network, and exhibit their products and services are the target of a pair of programs offered through the Bluefield State College School of Business. A “Tools for Small Business” workshop and “Small Business Expo” are designed to bring small businesses, the College, and community together in a mutually beneficial fashion.
The “Tools for Small Business” workshop on February 4 (9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.) in Mahood Hall will cover topics like “Using the Media,” “Computer Possibilities,” and “Marketing on a Shoestring,” according to Susan Mann, BSC visiting instructor/Marketing. “The workshop will be regionally-focused and will be packed with a wide range of ideas for networking and sharing knowledge, limiting liability, and using the media,” she noted.
The “Small Business Expo” will be presented on February 22 (10 a.m.-7 p.m.) in the Hebert Gallery/Harris-Jefferson Student Center. “There are many small businesses that can’t participate in larger expos for a variety of reasons,” Mann added. “This event provides these businesses with an inexpensive opportunity to gain positive exposure with potential customers and the general public.” There is no admission charge for area residents to attend the event.
Cost for participation for small businesses is $75 per event, or $100 for both. Additionally, small businesses that sign up and take part in both activities will receive a $25 refund per event at the conclusion of the programs.
“These events help to strengthen the connection between the School of Business and our students to area small businesses and the communities we serve,” Mann stated. “It’s a wonderful way to celebrate and help our small business community. She also expressed special appreciation for the support provided for these initiatives by Dr. Felica Blanks (President of the Bluefield State College Research and Development Corporation), Gerald James (interim director of Projects and Planning for the BSC Research and Development Corporation), Dr. Elaine Scott (interim Dean/BSC School of Business), and faculty within the College’s School of Business.
