( Bluefield)—Carolyn Turner Kirby, Director/Student Support Services (SSS) at Bluefield State College, was voted “President-Elect” of the West Virginia Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel (WVAEOPP) at the organization’s November 12-15 conference in Charleston. At the conclusion of her one-year term next November, Kirby will become WVAEOPP president.
“WVAEOPP is the state association of federally funded TRIO programs in West Virginia, and it’s an honor to have been elected to serve as an officer of the association,” Kirby stated. “Twenty-four of the 30 TRIO programs in West Virginia belong to WVAEOPP.”
As president-elect, Kirby will serve WVAEOPP in the absence of the president and will attend meetings of the regional Mid-Eastern Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel (MEAEOPP), which encompasses five states and the District of Columbia. She will also submit reports of MEAEOPP meetings to the WVAEOPP’s membership.
“In 2008, I will coordinate the WVAEOPP/MEAEOPP Student Leadership Conference and Bluefield State College will serve as a host site,” Kirby said. “The conference provides a tremendous opportunity to bring students to our campus from Upward Bound, Talent Search, and Student Support Services programs.”
Also, during the November 2006 WVAEOPP conference, BSC SSS representatives Carol Baldwin (program coordinator), Lisa Bennett (SSS counselor), and Kirby delivered the presentation, “Proactive Approaches for Improving Service Delivery at Bluefield State College.”
