Five BSC Alumnae to be Honored
as “Pioneers in Education”

(Bluefield)—They’ve touched thousands of lives in their combined 200 years as classroom teachers, and on April 25, they’ll be recognized as “Pioneers in Education” during a program in their honor at Bluefield State College’s Hebert Gallery, April 25 at 11 a.m.

The program spotlights BSC alumnae Virginia Hebert, Fannie Poole, Harriet Wright, Susie Guyton, and Eunice Fleming for their lives and careers. Each participated in an “oral history project,” coordinated by BSC Archivist Peggy Turnbull and produced by Jerry Conner, College Graphic Arts Designer/AV Technician Designer, and a brief DVD featuring excerpts of their interviews will be shown during the program.

“This initiative has gained a tremendous amount of momentum and support, both within the College and throughout the community,” noted Dedriell Taylor, Interim Director/Multicultural Affairs. “It began as an oral history project and grew into a program to honor these very special career educators who are BSC graduates. Interestingly, four of our honorees graduated from the College prior to 1945 and all taught during times of segregation and integration. Their experiences are insightful and very moving.”

Taylor expressed special thanks to Turnbull and Conner for their investment of time and energy in the project. “There will be a reception following the program, and Dr. Thomas Blevins (Dean of the Virtual College, Information Technology & School of Teacher Education) and Dr. Betsy Steenken (Director of Teacher Education; Assistant Professor, Education) will be present, as well. We are hopeful that several area public school principals, administrators, and educators can attend, too.”

Additional information regarding the “Pioneers in Education” program can be obtained by contacting Dedriell Taylor (304-327-4512).
