BSC Receives WVEPSCoR Grant
for Research Proposal Preparation

(Bluefield)—Bluefield State College has been selected to receive a $5,000 grant through the West Virginia Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (WVEPSCoR) to assist investigators in preparing research proposals. The mini-grant, prepared and submitted by Dr. Tesfaye Belay, BSC Assistant Professor of Research, will assist in the preparation of a $275,000 grant that will be submitted to the National Institutes for Health (NIH).

Only eight researchers from five West Virginia universities and colleges were selected to receive mini-grants through the EPSCoR program. “This mini-grant will help provide the resources needed for the preparation of stronger, more competitive proposals to fund our research,” noted Dr. Belay. “WVEPSCoR will also review our NIH grant before its submission.”

Dr. Paul Hill, WVEPSCoR Director, observed that the goal of the program is to increase West Virginia’s competitive research infrastructure. “A relatively modest investment of state funds can lead to large awards from federal or private sources,” he said. “Everyone in West Virginia wins when we are able to increase the amount of research taking place at our colleges and universities. Studies show that regions of the country with more research offer a better quality of life, including higher wages and more jobs.”

Additionally, in May, Dr. Belay will represent Bluefield State College at the American Society for Microbiology’s 107 th General Meeting in Toronto, Canada. He will present the collaborative findings of academic research teams from BSC and Atlanta, GA-based institutions Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse School of Medicine, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, specifically detailing the work of BSC students Patience Hall and Todd Jamrose that focuses upon Chlamydia-related disease.
