(Bluefield)—You’re encouraged to get your feet wet for a wonderful cause. A coordinated effort to “Renew the New River” includes several opportunities very soon in which to clean up this region’s portion of the oldest river in North America.
The Bluestone River, a tributary of the New River, will host a one-day clean up effort on Saturday, August 18. Sponsored by the Bluestone Conservatory, this clean up will be held in the Falls Mills section of the Bluestone. Several New River clean up efforts will take place throughout Virginia and North Carolina on September 8, according to Dr. Michael Smith. A member of the Bluestone Conservatory Board of Trustees, Smith is also a member of the New River Watershed Roundtable (NRWR), and he chairs the NRWR subcommittee focused upon cleaning up the New River. “We’re inviting everyone to take part in this initiative,” he stated. “We will clean up the area from Foster Falls, near the Shot Tower and I-77 and work to Allsionia along the New River Trail. More than one million people visit the park each year, with the greatest number coming through Foster Falls.”
Volunteers will meet at Foster Falls at 9 a.m. on September 8. “We are grateful for every volunteer,” Smith added. “Some may simply love the New River,” he continued. “It’s certainly a wonderful place to canoe, paddle, fish, camp, bike and hike. Others might hold a strong interest in ecology. We hope to involve groups that see this as a very worthwhile service project.” Last year, more than 20 Bluefield State College students and employees took part in the New River clean up effort.
Participants should bring river shoes, and they can provide their own bikes and canoes. The Virginia Park Service will furnish shuttle service and trash pick up. Volunteers are encouraged to call (276-728-0036), or e-mail Dr. Smith (msmith@bluefieldstate.edu)
