BSC Announces Black History
Month Program Series

(Bluefield)--Four major events highlight Bluefield State College’s celebration of Black History Month in February. Dedriell Taylor, interim Director of Multicultural Affairs at BSC, noted that “Bessie’s Blues,” a one-woman stage play and musical celebrating the life and times of legendary blues singer Bessie Smith, will launch the College’s Black History Month series, beginning at 10:30 a.m., February 7, in the Basic Science Auditorium. “Bessie’s Blues” features Doris A. Fields, whose “in character” performance as Bessie Smith has been widely acclaimed throughout the region.

“Doris Fields’ performance as Bessie Smith transports audiences back in time to the early 1920s and 1930s,” Taylor observed. “It touches the music of the day and the racial climate of the country. Bessie Smith’s legacy is much more than the music and style that made her famous. She opened doors of opportunity for African-Americans and for women, in general.”

On Friday, February 9, BSC alumnus, educator and former statesman Dr. William Bernard Robertson will return to his alma mater in conjunction with the dedication of the “Robertson Collection,” a historically significant number of documents, photographs, and artifacts from his years of distinguished public, professional, and community service. The Robertson Collection will be available for viewing in the Hebert Gallery, Harris-Jefferson Student Center, beginning at 2 p.m. on February 9 and continuing during regular center hours of operation through the remainder of the month, then will be housed in the BSC Archives/Hardway Library.

“’A Community Choir’ in Concert” will present a musical program on February 17, beginning at 3 p.m., in the Harris-Jefferson Student Center. The choral presentation will celebrate African American contributions to the field of music. On February 18, the Honorable Clif Moore, West Virginia House of Delegates/23 rd District, will speak during the program, “ A Place at the Table.” That program, which is sponsored by the BSC Office of Alumni Affairs, begins at 2:30 p.m. in the Harris-Jefferson Student Center.

There is no admission charge for the programs, and the public is encouraged to attend. Additional information about this program and future Black History Month activities at BSC can be obtained by contacting Dedriell Taylor, (304) 327-4512, or dtaylor@bluefieldstate.edu
