( Bluefield)—“Bessie’s Blues,” a one-woman stage play and musical celebrating the life and times of legendary blues singer Bessie Smith, on February 7 beginning at 10:30 a.m. in Bluefield State College’s Basic Science Auditorium, will mark the start of BSC’s month-long series of programs to celebrate Black History Month. The presentation features Doris A. Fields, whose “in character” performance as Bessie Smith has been widely acclaimed throughout the region.
“Doris Fields’ performance as Bessie Smith transports audiences back in time to the early 1920s and 1903s,” noted Dedriell Taylor, BSC’s Interim Director of Multicultural Affairs. “It touches the music of the day and the racial climate of the country. Bessie Smith’s legacy is much more than the music and style that made her famous. She opened doors of opportunity for African-Americans and for women, in general.”
Ms. Fields performs four songs in character, weaving each song with personal insights into Bessie Smith’s emotional life journey. There is no admission charge for the program, and the public is encouraged to attend. Additional information about this program and future Black History Month activities at BSC can be obtained by contacting Dedriell Taylor, (304) 327-4512, or dtaylor@bluefieldstate.edu
