Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
Program at BSC

( BLUEFIELD)--Free income tax preparation assistance for low income and elderly individuals will be offered again this year by the faculty and students in the Accounting Program at Bluefield State College. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, co- sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service, will offer free tax preparation help, beginning on February 1, 2007 (3 p.m.-6 p.m.) at Bluefield State College.

Wednesdays (4 p.m.-6 p.m.) and Thursdays (3 p.m.-6 p.m.)
February 1-April 12 (except March 14-15)

Craft Memorial Library, Bluefield
Saturday: (noon-4 p.m.) February 10, March 10, April 7

Princeton Library
Saturday: (noon-4 p.m.) February 3, March 3, March 31

VITA services will also be available on Monday, April 16 at the U.S. Post Office ( Cumberland Road) in Bluefield (5 p.m.-midnight).

Items to bring:
This year's tax package and/or mailing label
All forms, including W-2s, 1099s, related to income and deduction
Information concerning other income and deductions
Information concerning dependents and tax credits
A copy of your return from last year

"All individuals participating in tax return preparation through this program have undergone training to prepare to do tax returns," noted William Goodman, BSC Associate Professor of Accounting, who serves as VITA site coordinator. Bluefield State College students and accounting faculty donated more than 700 hours and provided income tax preparation assistance for 321 area residents during the 2006 tax season.

"Our volunteers alert taxpayers to special credits and deductions, helping them in the preparation of forms, answering questions, and providing additional information," noted Goodman.
