(Bluefield)—Dr. Warren Burch, Bluefield State College Associate Professor of Mathematics, participated in the West Virginia Department of Education’s “Statewide County Mathematics Leadership Institute” in Charleston. The four-day event, which attracted more than 200 mathematics educators, focused upon methods for enhancing the review and evaluation of math programs in the state’s K-12 public schools.
Dr. Ron Pelfrey, a recipient of Kentucky’s “Outstanding Mathematics Educator Award,” was the keynote speaker. Pelfrey has led the evaluation of more than 300 elementary, middle, and high school mathematics programs and has trained hundreds of teachers and administrators in the process of conducting these reviews.
“The Mathematics Leadership Institute detailed the most effective means for conducting a comprehensive review and evaluation of how math is taught at the public school level, along with the process for helping schools improve their math programs,” Burch explained.
Program participants will consider how well schools utilize the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and West Virginia content standards, visiting schools to interview principals and teachers, as well as students and their parents. In addition, the visits will include classroom evaluations.
“ West Virginia is doing an outstanding job of trying to improve education,” Burch added. “The Mathematics Leadership Institute was an extensive, detailed workshop and provided an opportunity for mathematics educators to learn and share.”
