(Bluefield)—Chicory Square in Bluefield, WV can now give visitors laptop computer wireless internet connectivity. This region’s newest “hot spot” brings the “world of the web” to the park bench at the downtown Bluefield landmark. “This “hot spot” permits anyone with a laptop or notebook computer to enjoy the freedom of wirelessly connecting to the internet while enjoying the scenery of springtime in Chicory Square,” noted Gerald James, Business Development Director/Bluefield State College Research & Development (BSC R&D) Corporation.
Several months ago, US Congressman Nick Rahall announced that the Bluefield Technology Transfer and Community Development Center, operated by the BSC R&D Corporation, had been selected as the Southern Anchor point for the Connected Technologies Corridor program. In conjunction with the announcement, the R&D Corporation unveiled a research project in partnership with Four Seasons Wireless, a Bluefield, VA-based internet service provider, to provide “hot spot” internet connectivity at Chicory Square throughout the spring. “Through this arrangement, the BSC R&D Corporation can gauge the internet access needs of web users in downtown Bluefield,” James explained.
“Logging into the hot spot is simple and free,” he continued. “Select your wireless adapter and search for available networks, choose the “FSW-BSC HOT SPOT” from the list, then connect. Once the wireless adapter has connected, users can click on their internet browser, after which they’ll be directed to a free log-in screen where they can click on the “OK” button.”
The BSC R&D Corporation building houses a small business incubator, space for light industrial activities, and office space for companies locating in Bluefield, James said. The facility features conference rooms, an auditorium, and training rooms. “To assist companies seeking broadband high-speed internet access, we can help companies tap into a much expanded level of access and increase their competitive advantage,” he summarized.
