(Bluefield)—A short quiz administered at Bluefield State College’s Wendell G. Hardway Library was designed to encourage information literacy, and response to the weeklong initiative was overwhelmingly positive. Fifty BSC students and community library users took part in the contest, with awards presented the winners during a brief ceremony, May 1.
Joanna Thompson, Hardway Library Director, explained, “So often, the library and all it has to offer is one of the best-kept secrets in the community. This quiz was a fun way to promote library services and to encourage individuals to discover, first hand, the great resources available here.”
“The quiz yielded great customer feedback for the library staff,” added Nancy Adam Turner, Staff Librarian. “This information will help us understand how students perceive what the library has to offer.
On April 25, Thompson and Turner reviewed answer sheets, pooling those containing only correct responses. From that group, Thompson drew names of the top ten winners. Belinda Hill received top prize (a $50 gift certificate), and the other awardees received flash drives or metallic pen sets. They included Timitra Pannell, Carol Cox, Paul Bailey, Beth King, Mychal Guyton, Angel Kendall, Jennee Houghtaling, Joshua Howell, and Alexander Terry.
“The quiz promoted information literacy by enhancing students’ ability to locate information, understand its relevance, and grasp how to access the information via electronic and traditional paper formats,” Thompson said. Plans are proceeding for a library quiz/scavenger hunt that will be held in the fall, according to Turner.
