Ford “Partnership for Advanced Studies”
Program Through Bluefield State
College Yielding “Real World”
Benefits for Student Participants

(Bluefield)—The Ford “Partnership for Advanced Studies (PAS)” program is designed to cultivate “real world,” career-enhancing skills.  Recently, Bluefield State College hosted a program, spotlighting several students and faculty in the program, as they shared their personal experiences related to the program’s effectiveness.  Each student speaker—those from BSC who had received training in teaching the program, and those students at area schools and the Wade Center in Bluefield, where the program is being offered—validated the value and timeliness of the program.

“Janet Padilla, Ford PAS Program Manager, provided a detailed presentation, providing information to representatives from area high schools, Boards of Education, and BSC faculty, staff, and students,” explained Susan Mann, visiting Marketing Instructor at BSC and author of the Ford PAS grant, which enables the implementation of new curriculum focused on the 21st Century Learning Skills.  “The curriculum is built upon the pillars of student centered learning, inquiry based, problem solving, critical thinking, communication, coordinated learning experiences and teamwork.”

The purpose of the meeting at BSC was two-fold, according to Mann.  First, it promoted awareness of the Ford PAS curriculum, and second, and encouraged the development of proposals from local educators to implement the Ford PAS curriculum.

Currently, Bluefield State College has supported and implemented the Ford PAS curriculum at Bluefield State College, Bluefield High School and the Wade Center. Representatives from each program were present to provide first-hand accounts of the benefits and challenges of the curriculum. (Insert student quotes here).

“The goal of Ford PAS at Bluefield State College is to implement the curriculum in as many area schools and reach as many students as possible,” Mann noted.  “The goal of Ford PAS is to create a community of learning bringing together colleges, schools, community and businesses.”  Area schools and/or programs interested in receiving more information regarding the Ford PAS program are encouraged to contact Mann (304-327-4082, or by e-mail, smann@bluefieldstate.edu).
