(Bluefield)—The coordinated effort to promote understanding of, and respect for, diversity at Bluefield State College received a momentum-creating boost recently. The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission (HEPC) announced its decision to award a $9600 Social Justice Initiatives grant to the College.
Dr. Sapphire Cureg, BSC’s Director of Multicultural Affairs, wrote and submitted the grant. “This grant will help to underwrite the planning, programming, and enacting of diversity initiatives and multicultural learning experiences during the current academic year,” she said. The plan includes providing students, employees and the community-at-large with access to systematic and formal cross-racial and cultural opportunities that include training, lectures, seminars, and workshops.
“We will celebrate eight ‘Heritage Month Remembrances,’ partner with two area middle schools, conduct a ‘Community Cross-Cultural Education Day,’ work with faculty to integrate the themes of multiculturalism and/or diversity into their offerings, and provide on-campus cultural sensitivity training,” Cureg added.
“We are grateful for the support of the Higher Education Policy Commission, and we are confident that their investment in these initiatives will cultivate a greater appreciation for diversity and multiculturalism at Bluefield State College,” she stated.
