(Bluefield)—A three-member delegation, including three students, from the Bluefield State College chapter of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) participated in the recent ASALH national conference in Charlotte, NC. The five-day conference, whose theme was “From Slavery to Freedom—Africans in the Americas,” included a variety of initiatives designed to promote, research preserve, interpret, and disseminate information about Black life, history, and culture to the global community.
BSC students Marviene Johnson, and Mychal Guyton, and BSC Program Manager Terry Thompson took part in the activities, including the African American Heritage Tour of Charlotte, NC, and the annual ASALH banquet, honoring Dr. John Hope Franklin, the James B. Duke Professor of Emeritus of History at Duke University. ASALH is the oldest organization in the world dedicated to the study and promotion of Black history.
“The most memorable part of the trip, for me, was meeting Dr. Franklin,” Guyton said. “His impact upon American and African American history is well documented. Just being in his presence was motivating and inspiring. I realized, during our conversation, that I was talking to ‘living history.’”
“I was inspired by this convention to encourage young people to seek higher education,” Johnson added. “I left the meeting proud to be a member of such a wonderful organization. I am grateful for our ASALH chapter at Bluefield State College and Dr. Howard Wade (BSC Associate Professor of History and BSC ASALH chapter president) for making it possible for me to experience an unforgettable event.”
“I have never attended a conference that brought together such a diverse group of people from all over the country,” Thompson noted. “The recognition extended to Dr. Franklin during the closing banquet was very richly deserved.”
The Bluefield State College ASALH will host its first annual luncheon on November 10, beginning at 1 p.m. in the Harris-Jefferson Student Center. Dr. Albert Walker, BSC President, will be the featured speaker. Tickets ($5.00) can be purchased by contacting Dr. Wade (304-327-4291) BSC ASALH Advisor Ms. Peggy Turnbull (304-327-4053) or Ms. Thompson (304-327-4424).
