"Defying Gravity"
to be Presented
November 29 - December 1
at Bluefield State College

(Bluefield)— The Blue Chicory Players at Bluefield State College will present “Defying Gravity” by Jane Anderson, November 29-December 1, in the Basic Science Auditorium on the BSC campus. The November 29 matinee begins at 12:30 p.m., with the November 30 and December 1 performances starting at 7:30 p.m.  The group is under the direction of Dr. Sharon Bebout Carr, Assistant Professor of Speech.

“Defying Gravity” is a surrealistic look at the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger in 1986.  The play uses multiple perspectives to explore the effects of the tragedy on the daughter of our first teacher in space, the people who knew and worked with the astronauts, and the American public.  “This is a play that pays homage to the Challenger 7 and to the commitment and spirit that propelled its crew into space,” observed Dr. Carr.

“The play transports all of us who were alive at the time of the Challenger tragedy back to where we were and what we were doing when we learned of the explosion,” Carr continued.  “More importantly, it asks us to think about what it meant at the time, and what it means for future endeavors.”

The cast includes Andrew A. Lawrence, Karen Harvey, Shamatee Mitchell, Nick Mosko, Susan Gore, Becky Dale, and Jody Neal.  “This is an extraordinary cast,” Carr added.  “They are talented and committed, and they are a pleasure to watch.  I am excited to be part of the development of theatre at Bluefield State College, and I’m very proud of what we have been able to accomplish with limited resources.”

Tickets will be available ($5 each) at the door.  BSC students and employees will be admitted free of charge.
