(Bluefield)—More than 20 Bluefield State College students participated in the recent “Candidate Awareness Workshop,” designed to help them prepare for the PRAXIS II tests, required for teacher licensure in West Virginia.  The daylong workshop featured Dr. Jim Jackson, who helped them prepare for and develop individual study plans for the tests.

The PRAXIS II consists of three tests—elementary curriculum, theories of teaching and learning, and content knowledge.  Students from both the Bluefield and Lewisburg campus took part in the initiative, analyzed sample test questions, and discussed strategies for success.  Dr. Jackson, a retired teacher, principal, and school superintendent, told attendees, “My goal is that you leave with more confidence, knowing that you have the tools, strategies, and insights to successfully complete the PRAXIS assessment.  I also want you to have fun and gain a feeling of collegial support and togetherness with this topic—one that often causes stress and intimidation.”

Dr. Tom Blevins, Dean of the BSC School of Education, added, “I am pleased that we can provide this workshop.  The strategies presented throughout the day will certainly help BSC teacher candidates as they prepare for these tests.”

“Dr. Jackson’s insight was particularly relevant because of his professional experience as a teacher, administrator and representative with the Educational Testing Service,” added Dr. Betsy Steenken, Teacher Education Program Director at BSC.
