Regional Law Enforcement Professionals
Attend Anti-Terrorism Intelligence Awareness
Training Program at BSC

(Bluefield)—Approximately 40 law enforcement professionals from throughout the region attended an “Anti-Terrorism Intelligence Awareness Training Program,” presented in consecutive one-day sessions at Bluefield State College. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and BSC, the program provided front line officers and first-line supervisors with a working knowledge of the intelligence process, guidelines, policies, tools, and techniques. Officers who have arrested domestic terrorists were featured during the event.

Les Jenson, Senior Program Specialist/Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, observed, “Knowledge gained in this course aids participants in the detection of pre-incident indicators related to terrorist activity in the community—activity that may be encountered during the course of law enforcement duties.” He noted that the attendees at the BSC-based programs are “force multipliers,” front line law enforcement professionals whose ability to access and share information enhances overall anti-terrorism effectiveness.

“We stress three things—recognition of possible terrorist activity, recording the information, and reporting the information,” he continued. “Information sharing starts here, and it can be analyzed, with output provided to state and local agencies.” The Bluefield State College programs mark the 95th presentation that Homeland Security has made to law enforcement professionals in 43 cities during the past two years.
