Dr. Tesfaye Belay, BSC Professor,
Receives $10K Research Grant
from NASA WV Space Grant Consortium

(Bluefield)—Dr. Tesfaye Belay, an Assistant Professor of Biology at Bluefield State College, has been selected to receive a $10,000 “Research Seed Grant” from the NASA West Virginia Space Grant Consortium.  The grant will fund laboratory supplies for BSC’s continuing NASA-related research projects.  Additionally, the grant will cover expenses for BSC student Tanise Montgomery’s participation in the upcoming annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) to be held in Orlando, FL.

“This grant will strengthen Bluefield State College’s ability to strengthen the depth and breadth of NASA research work initiated at BSC,” Dr. Belay noted.  Through an earlier grant from West Virginia Idea Network for Biomedical Research Excellence (WV-INBRE) and mini-grant from WVEPSCoR, BSC established a biomedical research laboratory and the College is now a participant in a statewide higher education research network.

“Through our research laboratory, we promote basic biomedical research, acquire extramural grant support, and disseminate information on our research findings to the scientific community,” Dr. Belay continued.
