(Bluefield)—The Bluefield State College chapter of Gamma Beta Phi received a national award and multi-state recognition at the Society’s recent national convention in Greensboro, NC.

BSC student Helena Taylor, Historian of the College’s Gamma Beta Phi chapter, received a fourth place award in the program’s national scrapbook category, designed to review each chapter’s degree of service, educational excellence, and leadership.  “This was a significant honor for our chapter,” observed Susan Mann, BSC Visiting Assistant Professor of Marketing and chapter co-advisor.  “This year’s chapter projects included conducting a clothing and food drive for new mothers and infants through ‘Mary’s Cradle,’ collecting food and coats for the Bluefield Union Mission, conducting two parties for residents at Westwood Health Care Center, assisting with two  bloodmobile drives, and undertaking one project for the ‘Samaritan’s Purse.’”

During the selection of officers for the Gamma Beta Phi West Virginia/Pennsylvania region at the national convention, BSC’s Weston Monk was elected President, Helena Taylor was elected Secretary, and Susan Mann was elected to be an advisor.

“The cornerstones of Gamma Beta Phi are ‘scholarship, character, and service,’” noted Mann.  “We are proud of our students and our chapter’s achievements.”  Dr. Tammy Ferguson, Dean/School of Arts & Sciences, is also a co-advisor for the BSC chapter.
