Black History Month Activities
at Bluefield State College


(Bluefield)—The history of Bluefield State College is steeped with examples of resilience, strength, and perseverance.  Later this month, BSC’s history will be the subject of a pair of presentations by Bluefield State College student Shamatee Mitchell.  The programs are featured activities during BSC’s celebration of Black History Month.

Mitchell, an outstanding student and athlete at BSC, has been very active in a wide range of campus activities, and she was a member of the cast of “Defying Gravity,” a dramatic production that was presented at the College during the fall semester.  Her Black History Month programs will be presented on Wednesday, February 20, beginning at 11 a.m. in  the Basic Science Building, Room 104, and on Tuesday, February 26 at 2 p.m. in Hardway Library.

“This will be a wonderful program,” observed Peggy Turnbull, Interim Director/BSC Library.  “Ms. Mitchell is an outstanding speaker.  Attendees will learn about the rich history of Bluefield State College, and the program will promote better understanding of the broader subject of segregation in West Virginia history and its impact upon education.”  There is no admission charge and the programs are open to the public.

Additionally, a performance by the Kusun Ensemble from Ghana will be spotlighted during activity Black History Month activities at the College.  The ensemble will present traditional dances, supported by talented musicians from Africa’s rhythm and beat culture, Ghana, according to Dr. Sapphire Cureg, BSC’s Director of Multicultural Affairs.  There is no admission charge for the February 12 program, beginning at noon, in the Basic Science Auditorium/Bluefield State College. 

Other activities during Black History Month at BSC include “A Place at the Table,” a dining experience with jazz music on February 22, 2008, 2:30 pm in the Hebert Gallery, and the BSC Black Student Association Luncheon, February 27, beginning at 11 a.m. in the Harris-Jefferson Student Center.
