Nursing Scholarships for
2007-08 Academic Year

(Bluefield)—Sixteen Bluefield State College students have been awarded scholarships from the West Virginia Center for Nursing for the 2007-08 academic year.  Three of the students are enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program and 13 of whom are enrolled in the Associate of Science degree in Nursing (ADN) program at BSC.

The BSC scholarship recipients included BSN students Sheila Edwards (Ballard, WV), Beverly Lambert (McGraws, WV), and Linda Hicks (Sandstone, WV), along with ADN students Stacie Bishop (Buc, WV), Brian Tonelli (Beckley, WV), Dawn Critchlow (Mt. Lookout, WV), Kelly Shamblin (Gauley Bridge, WV), William Lilly (Cool Ridge, WV), Sara King (Bluefield, WV), Christina Booth (Princeton, WV), Ivy Seay (Fayetteville, WV), Brandi Torres (Kimball, WV), Brandi Basham (Jumping Branch, WV), Heather Waddell (Bluefield, WV), Jennifer Poff (Princeton, WV), and Amanda Clay (Princeton, WV).

Duane F. Napier, executive director of the West Virginia Center for Nursing, noted, "This program was created to assist students to be successful in nursing education programs by lifting financial burdens that may not be addressed in other financial aid programs.  It assists the West Virginia Center for Nursing to address its goal of promoting nursing and addressing the shortage in West Virginia."

“We sincerely appreciate the initiatives by the State of West Virginia to provide programs such as this to help our students,” observed Sandy Wynn, Interim Director of the ADN program at Bluefield State College.  “Many of our nursing students go to school full time, work full time, and raise a family full time.  Funds of this nature assist our students to succeed at BSC and become a vital, essential member of the health care field in West Virginia.”
The West Virginia Center for Nursing was created by the legislature in March 2004 to enhance and strengthen nursing excellence and optimize the health and health care of all West Virginians through strategic workforce planning, education, research, and nurse practice development.
