(Bluefield)—Bluefield State College students Jaquetta Lester of Northspring, WV and Donna Smith of Rainelle, WV, have been awarded $600 scholarships from the West Virginia Association of Retired School Employees (WVARSE) to use during their student teaching this semester. Lester is a student teacher at Welch Elementary and Smith is student teaching at Rupert Elementary.
Dr. Elisabeth Steenken, Director of Teacher Education, emphasized the honor for two BSC Teacher Education students to be chosen from all the applicants in the state and how grateful she was to WVARSE for sponsoring this award, saying “Many of our students travel long distances to complete their student teaching and as a result have added financial burdens. This scholarship helps in many ways.”
WVARSE established the student teacher scholarship to assist future teachers with a dedication to learning and academic achievement. The scholarship program is open to students in West Virginia colleges who have successfully completed their preparation for student teaching and have been recommended by their colleges for formal student teaching in an elementary or secondary public school.
A select committee of WVARSE members reviewed the applications and made a recommendation to the Executive Board. Scholarship recipients were chosen with attention to academic standing, financial need and recommendations from the college director of student teaching.
