Equipment From WV Division
of Homeland Security

(Bluefield)—Five digital two-way radios, presented recently to Bluefield State College by the West Virginia Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (WV DHSEM), will significantly augment BSC’s communication capabilities within the campus and with outside agencies, including 911 centers and law enforcement offices.

Jimmy Gianato, Director/WV DHSEM, made the presentation to Rick Akers, BSC’s Director of Public Safety, during a brief ceremony at the College.  Robert Hoge, Director of the Mercer County 911 Center, told Akers about the opportunity to request the radios from the state homeland security grant program.

“The governor has long recognized that communication is a key in any disaster,”Gianago commented.  “That’s why the radios are being provided to Bluefield State College.  The ability to communicate is the lifeline for a first responder.”  Two-way radios have also been given to some other public colleges and universities in the state.

BSC personnel will work with the Mercer County 911 Center to receive training to maximize understanding and utilization of the new radios.
