(Bluefield)—Following six weeks internship experience in the office of United States Congressman Nick J. Rahall, II, Ole Zimmer has returned to Bluefield State College as a most enthusiastic participant in the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) Program.
Zimmer, who spent the fall 2007 semester as a student at BSC, embarked on a six-month internship in January—a requirement of the one year/work study CBYX program that is designed to give college students an understanding of, and appreciation for, everyday life abroad, insight into how their professional counterparts are trained, and an opportunity to experience the foreign workplace in their career field.
He was one of only five CBYX participants chosen from a group of 75 to take part in the congressional internship opportunity. “It was a wonderful experience,” he said, shortly after returning to BSC to complete his six-month internship as an employee in the College’s Computer Center office. “I attended some congressional committee meetings and a few House and Senate sessions.”
His six-weeks in Washington, DC also included time to tour museums and historically significant sites. “I now have a greater understanding of American politics,” he added. “Watching democracy in action makes what I’ve read and heard about America become more understandable.”
Zimmer will return to the Nation’s Capitol at the conclusion of his internship, joining the program’s other participants, then he will fly home to Germany. He praised Dr. Sudhakar Jamkhandi, Coordinator of International Initiatives at BSC, along with his Bluefield host family, John and Betse Feuchtenberger, for their help in making his stay in the region a productive one.
“My time here has changed my life,” he commented. “I have enjoyed my experience at the College. I will return to America. I want to work and live here.”
