Bluefield State College Foundation’s
Gala Auction a Rousing Success

Additional Photos

(Bluefield)—Ninety bidders braved the wind and snow Saturday, March 8, to attend the Bluefield State College Foundation’s Gala Auction at Gary Bowling’s House of Art, 701 Bland Street in Bluefield. The festivities included bountiful food and drink provided by David’s, jazz music by the Blu-Note Trio (as a quartet) and the antics of Big Blue, BSC’s mascot. A total of $15,088 was raised through sponsorships, ticket sales, a 50-50 raffle and over 75 auction items.

Sponsors First Community Bank, the Frank L. Smoot Charitable Trust, George M. Cruise Foundation, New Peoples Bank and Saunders Staffing offset the costs of catering and advertising. The newly reopened House of Art (formerly get sm’ART) featured freshly plastered walls, scrubbed floors and lively artwork throughout the first and second stories of the former Stateside Building. The local artists whose work is featured in the gallery worked day and night to get the venue ready for the event, as did owners Gary Bowling, Bonnie Patterson and Pete Sternloff.  Those hard-working artists were high bidders on the Shopsmith Five-in-One multipurpose tool unit.

In the highlight of the evening, auctioneer Eddie Pauley led the bidding for a red 1990 Mazda Miata. High bidders were Sudhakar and Carolyn Jamkhandi, who won the sports car for $3,200.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Bluefield State College Foundation’s Unrestricted Annual Fund.
