(Bluefield)—Scholarship recipients from Bluefield State College, along with the individuals and organizations whose generosity provided those scholarships, were saluted during the annual BSC Scholarship Recognition Dinner, April 24. Case Mitchell, a BSC alumnus who is the Lead Engineer at GE Fanuc, and three BSC students shared with the audience of more than 120 how opportunities created through scholarships have changed their lives.

Mitchell, a graduate of the College’s Electrical Engineering Technology program, detailed how BSC provided the career skills and support that have helped throughout his career in industry.  He is GE Fanuc’s lead engineer for Circuit Board Design and Computer Aided Engineering Systems.  He was introduced by Roy Pruett, BSC Professor & Department Head/Electrical Engineering Technology.

Annette Osborne, immediate past president of the BSC Foundation, paid tribute during the program to her longtime friend and philanthropist, the late June Oblinger Shott.  Mrs. Shott’s generosity has funded numerous scholarship opportunities at BSC.

Dr. Don Smith, the College’s Vice President for Academic Affairs, also addressed the audience.  Speaking in behalf of BSC’s President, Dr. Albert Walker (who was attending a national conference), Dr. Smith recognized the scholarship donors in attendance, noting that their willingness to give has been invaluable in providing the 600+ scholarships that were awarded this academic year.

BSC students Mychal Guyton, Tammy Angle, and Travis Kelly also discussed the importance of the support they received through the scholarship program at the College.

John Cardwell, Vice President for Student Affairs, and Karen Harvey, Director/Institutional Advancement and Planning, expressed their gratitude for the scholarship opportunities created by the donors’ generosity, and they saluted the students and their families for their commitment to academic excellence.

The program was organized and directed by the BSC Office of Institutional Advancement and Planning.
