(Bluefield)—A $50,000 grant aimed at reducing the rate of tobacco use among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) adult tobacco users in southern West Virginia has been awarded to the Bluefield State College Minority Health Institute.
The grant from the West Virginia Department of Health & Human Resources’ Division of Tobacco Prevention, follows a $5,000 grant received last year for the prevention of tobacco use among pregnant women and minority students in southern West Virginia, according to Dr. Anthony Woart, Director of the Minority Health Institute and Professor of Sociology at BSC.
Woart, who wrote the proposal, will serve as program director for the grant. “This grant will inform the LGBT community so that they might readily consider cessation of tobacco use,” he explained. “Specifically, the program is designed to utilize outreach strategies that include hosting smoke-free LGBT nights, sponsorship of community events, and advertising in local LGBT print media to reach the target population.” Woart added that this project is important because, according to New York Times, the LGBT community has the highest rate of smoking than any other minority population in the country.
