(Bluefield)--Dr. Donald Caudill, Professor of Marketing at Gardner-Webb (NC) University, has enabled the creation of two newly endowed awards at Bluefield State College in memory of BSC employees who passed away last year.  During his years as a member of the BSC faculty, Dr. Caudill worked closely with the late William B. Goodman and Greg Shrewsberry, and his July 2009 donation to BSC will establish two memorial awards to recognize their dedication to community service.

Beginning in 2010, “The William B. Goodman Faculty Service Leadership Award” will be presented to a BSC faculty member for his/her service to others, and the “Gregory Shrewsberry Staff Leadership Service Award” will honor a BSC staff member for service to others.  “Both gentlemen were outstanding colleagues and embodied a willingness to help others in the college community and throughout the region,” Dr. Caudill noted.  Goodman, an Associate Professor of Accounting, also coordinated the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program at BSC for more than 20 years.  Shrewsberry was very active on a variety of civic, workforce development, and educational initiatives.

Seven years ago, Dr. Caudill established the “Brian A. Delp Service Leadership Award” in memory of Delp, a BSC student who lost his life five years ago while assisting a stranded motorist. During his years as a member of the BSC faculty, Caudill had advised and taught Delp in several business courses.

During his comments at BSC’s 2008 Scholarship Appreciation program, Dr. Caudill said, “I give because I was blessed by the gifts of others.  I give to honor the memory of my father (the late Alfred Caudill), and to pay tribute to my mother’s (Shirley Wampler Caudill’s) sacrifices,” he continued, saluting his parents, whose selflessness helped to make his dream of a college education become a reality.
Caudill also noted that the act of giving opens doors of blessing for the giver. “The only things we get to keep are the things we give away,” he said, quoting Winston Churchill. “I give because it is a joy to make a positive difference in someone’s life.”
