BSC Faculty Member Receives
$99K Grant Sub-Award from
WV-IDEA Network for
Biomedical Research Excellence

(Bluefield)—Dr. Tesfaye Belay (Associate Professor of Biology, Bluefield State College) has received over $99,000 grant subaward from the West Virginia-Idea Network for biomedical Excellence (WV-INBRE) to sustain and expand biomedical research at BSC.

Bluefield State College is among the selected institutions of higher education in the State of West Virginia who have partnership with WV-INBRE to enhance their capacity for educating and training their faculty and students in biomedical research.  During the past three years, Dr. Belay has received more than $160,000 in grant funding from WV-INBRE alone to promote basic biomedical research and strengthen the infrastructure for biomedical research within the BSC School of Arts and Sciences.

“I am grateful for the ongoing support received through WV-INBRE,” Dr. Belay stated. “It has been instrumental in the growth of biomedical research capabilities at Bluefield State College.”Dr. Tesfaye Belay stressed that involvement of undergraduates in research prepares, motivates, encourages and supports BSC students to become involved in biomedical research. A significant number of BSC undergraduate students have effectively participated in conducting research and presenting their findings at local and national scientific conferences.

Earlier this year, Dr. Belay received the prestigious “Outstanding Leadership in Faculty Research” award during the Thurgood Marshall College Fund’s Annual Member Universities Professional Institute & Exhibition Conference.  He also recently received a $20,000 grant award from WVNASA to conduct biomedical research involving undergraduate minority students.
