A Bluefield State College student team recently won the prestigious International Student Competition, held by the International Society of Measurement and Controls. The BSC student team of Bryan Bishop, Shannon Bowling, Jason Osborne, Sherrie Webb, and (alternate) Candice Osborne win the fifth annual international competition at the ISA/TECH 97 Expo in Anaheim, CA.
The International Student Competition consisted of two sections--an ISA Bowl and ISA Practical. The "bowl" involved tournament-type competition during which student teams competed, responding to questions on basic and advanced instrumentation and control theory and practice.
The ISA Practical portion of the competition included a "hands-on" exercise related to the field of instrumentation and control. BSC assistant professor/electrical engineering technology and ISA Student Section Advisor Roy Pruett noted the BSC student team defeated teams from institutions of higher education in the United States, Canada, and Russia. "Some of the team members received job offers during the conference," Pruett said, "and all were able to make contacts that will assist them in making future job plans."
According to Pruett, one of the advantages of competing in this event is the opportunity students are afforded to meet and share ideas with students from other parts of the United States and from other countries. Robert Harrison, a Boeing engineer who serves as student activities chair for the ISA organizing committee, said, "A major benefit students derive during the competition is the camaraderie between the teams. Many of these students will establish working relationships that last for years to come."
