Students in BSC civil engineering technology professor Alvin Lester's CIET 203 class recently toured the Platnick Steel & Engineering facility in Bluefield, VA. More than 20 BSC students in the "Statics & Strengths of Materials" class took part in the field trip. Platnick Steel structural engineer Brad Ayers directed the tour, which Lester arranged. "Our students had the opportunity to see the effort involved in fabricating a steel frame," Lester said. "In the classroom, we analyze the forces involved in the process, and at Platnick Steel, they witnessed the actual process of fabricating steel."

Ayers noted, "Platnick Steel is committed to the future of this region. This field trip permits us to have a role in what students will learn in this course," he said. "Platnick Steel has a very positive experience with the BSC graduates and employees who are working for us now and those who have worked for us in the past."

Alvin Platnick, president of Platnick Steel, has served for several years as a member of the Industrial Advisory Board of BSC's Civil Engineering Department."
