Dr. Patricia Mulvey, Bluefield State College Professor of History, was among 14 participants from West Virginia colleges and universities to participate in a recent study tour to Brazil, investigating environmental concerns and economic development. The trip was sponsored by the West Virginia Consortium for Faculty and Course Development in International Studies (FACDIS).
"My purpose in taking the trip was to see how Brazil had changed from a military dictatorship to democratic rule in the 28 years since I had last visited the country in 1970," Mulvey noted. "As a result of my trip, I have revised the syllabus for my general survey of Latin History to include a case study of Brazilian environmental history."
Mulvey's trip summary noted Brazil is in economic crisis. Still, she said, "Brazil presents the visitor with its variety and rich natural resources; economic development in the midst of economic misery."
The BSC history professor indicated she will spend at least six weeks of her general survey of Latin America on Brazil, focusing on environmental issues wherever applicable. The unit on environmental issues will focus upon forest destruction, Amazon explorations and economic developments, rural environment, urban environment, and public policy of recent Brazilian governments toward the environment.
