Nine Bluefield State College students are moving steadily toward earning their degrees in the Medical Assisting program, and will become the first graduates of the program in May.
The program, offered in collaboration between Bluefield State College and the Mercer County Technical Education Center, prepares graduates to become integral members of the health care delivery team, qualified by education and experience to work in the administrative office, the examining room, and the physician's laboratory.
Students learn skills in the administrative, clerical, patient care, and office laboratory hours, and in the second year of the program, they take part in externships with participating physicians and area medical facilities.
This May's BSC Medical Assisting graduating class will include Melissa Marrs, Lisa Stanley, Ladessa Lee, Julie Powell, Pam Shew, Tim Oren, Tamela Cook, Tammy Blankenship, and Carla Auton. Joyce Barker serves as program director, and instruction is delivered by Barker along with BSC Business Division faculty and selected faculty from other divisions at the College.
Graduates can sit for six certifying examinations (Phlebotomy Technician, EKG Technician, Clinical Medical Assistant, Billing & Coding Specialist, Medical Administrative Assistant, and Medical Transcriptionist), as well as two registered examinations (Registered Phlebotomy Technician and Registered Medical Assistant).
The program has restricted enrollment and accepts one class per year, beginning in the fall. Application deadline for the Medical Assisting program is May 15. Additional information may be obtained by contacting the BSC Admissions Office at (304) 327-4065.
