BSC Nursing Students' Project
Receives Grant-Funding

An innovative project developed by two Bluefield State College senior nursing students has received a $500 grant award from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. The project is designed to enhance the communication between critical care nurses and the families of individuals who are critically ill.

BSC graduating senior nursing students Barbara King and Crystal Green developed a program at Bluefield Regional Medical Center, utilizing "beeper" communication so that families of critically ill patients and hospital personnel may maintain contact whenever a need arises, and reduce stress associated with the illness of a family member.

The project, called the "Critical Connection," utilizes beepers in a structured environment to foster a positive relationship between critical care nurses and families of patients in intensive and coronary care units. "A structured communication system with the use of beepers for families of critical patients decreases stress levels and increases family and patient satisfaction," noted the BSC nursing students, who graduated in May.

Their "Critical Connection" family beeper program was an essential element of their "Study and Change" project.
