Dr. Shekhar Pradhan, Department Head of Electrical Engineering Technology at Bluefield State College, recently directed a two-day workshop, "Circuit Design and Simulation," using the state-of-the-art software, Electronic Workbench. The workshop was inaugurated by Frank Hart, Chair, Division of Engineering Technology and Computer Science at BSC.
Training was directed as a development activity for the faculty of community and technical colleges. Faculty members from regional community and technical colleges, including West Virginia State (Institute, WV), Fairmont State (Fairmont, WV), the Academy of Career & Technology (Beckley, WV), Roane Jackson Technical Center (Spencer, WV), Fayette Plateau Vo-Tech Center (Oak Hill, WV), Wytheville Community College (Wytheville, VA), New River Community College (Dublin, VA), Southwest Virginia Community College (Richlands, VA), and Bluefield State College participated in this workshop.
Electronic Workbench, Pradhan noted, is software that allows scientists and engineers to design, simulate, and test electric circuits without the need of hardware. "Use of this software as a learning tool for engineers and scientists has increased significantly, because of the rising costs of hardware," Pradhan said. "It is not possible for many industries and educational institutions to replace hardware every few years, because the technology is changing very rapidly."
Bluefield State offered this workshop upon the request of various faculty members from several community and technical colleges in both Virginias, Pradhan observed. "In recent years, Bluefield State College has taken a leading role in training faculty members throughout the Virginias in the latest use of electrical/electronics technology hardware and software," he said. Similar workshops were offered at BSC in the past on other emerging technologies.
The workshop was funded in part by the Community and Technical College component of the State College and University Systems of West Virginia. In addition to directing the workshop, Pradhan also wrote the proposal for its funding.
