Mountain State Regular Veterans Association
Gives Major Scholarship Donations
to Bluefield State and Concord College

The Mountain State Regular Veterans Association Post No. 57 has presented substantial scholarship support to both Bluefield State College and Concord College. Donations of $10,000 to each higher education institution by the veterans group will open a significant "window of opportunity" through scholarship assistance for local veterans, their dependents, widows, and widowers.

Forty $500 scholarships will be awarded, 20 at each institution, for the 1998-99 academic year. Under guidelines established by the Mountain State Regular Veterans Association Post 57, scholarship applicants must be either a veteran, dependent of a veteran, widow or widower of a veteran, a full-time student who maintains a grade point average of 2.5 or better, and a U.S. citizen who can demonstrate the need for financial aid.

"We believe it is a most beneficial use of these funds to assist our fellow veterans and their families in acquiring their college education in the local area," noted Dorothy Trigg, commander of the Mountain State Regular Veterans Association Post No. 57 and state president. "We will work in close cooperation with both of the colleges to provide this assistance to deserving individuals to help them reach their higher education goals."

Concord Vice President for Development Dr. Douglas Machesney added, "We appreciate the trust demonstrated by the veterans' association in providing funds so these individuals may stay close to home and work toward their college degree."

Annette Osborne, Director of Institutional Advancement at BSC, said, "We are delighted to have the privilege of offering these scholarships to worthy students who are veterans, dependents of veterans, or spouses of veterans."

The college officials also extended special thanks to scholarship chairman Jim McMillion and post commander Russell Hann.
