Nikki Giovanni to Speak at BSC April 29

Nikki Giovanni, whose poetry has achieved national and international acclaim for a quarter century, will deliver a poetry reading at Bluefield State College, April 29. The presentation by Ms. Giovanni, a Professor of English at Virginia Tech, will begin at 1 p.m. in the Basic Science Auditorium.

Ewanna Wiley, a counselor for the BSC's Student Support Services program, which is coordinating the event, notes that her appearance is open to students, faculty, staff, and the public, free of charge. "Nikki Giovanni is truly a remarkable writer and person," Wiley observed. "Her appearance provides a tremendous opportunity for area residents to hear one of the preeminent authors in America."

Among her many awards, Ms. Giovanni received the "Jeanine Rae Award for the Advancement of Women's Culture" during the 1995 National Music Festival. She was also the recipient of the "Inspirational Award," during the 1995 African American Heritage Arts Festival at Ohio State University.

After graduating with honors from Fisk University in 1967, she attended the University of Pennsylvania's School of Social Work and Columbia University. Her career as a poet and lecturer was launched during the late 1960s and early '70s. She has been a Professor of English at Virginia Tech since 1987.

Her appearance at Bluefield State College is being underwritten by the Federal Title III/BRACE program.
