Chief of Appalachian Council of American Indians Addresses BSC Student of Organization

Chief Clemenceau Allen
Clemenceau Allen, Chief of the Appalachian American Indians of West Virginia, addressed the first November meeting of the "Organization for Native American Interests," a Bluefield State College student organization.

Allen, a Cherokee Indian whose hometown is Mullens, WV, discussed the history of Native Americans in this region, and displayed a wide range of apparel and artifacts.

Dr. Jesse Morris, Bluefield State College Assistant Professor of Psychology, serves as the sponsor/advisor to the "Organization for Native American Interests." "With its establishment at BSC this semester, the Organization for Native American Interests is focused upon expanding student interest and cultivating club members' awareness of the heritage of Native Americans in this region and throughout the nation," Morris noted.

Organization members are planning to visit the Wolf Creek Settlement this month. "Executive Director Bing Larson will detail the history of the Wolf Creek Settlement, which used to be a Native community. We will view artifacts obtained from several archaeological digs there," Morris continued. "The settlement has developed into a park-like setting and it is a real educational opportunity for our students."
