Blevins Participates in NCATE Accreditation
Visit to McNeese State (LA) University

Dr Tom Blevins Dr. Tom Blevins, Director of Bluefield State College's Instructional Technology Center and Center for Extended Learning, recently participated in a visit to McNeese State University (Lake Charles, LA) where he served as a member of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) Board of Examiners' team. The on-site visitation team serves as the "eyes and ears" of NCATE's Unit Accrediting Board, which makes accreditation decisions.

Dr. Blevins received training last fall in Louisville, KY, with a one-week intensive training session culminating in a mock team visit to the University of Louisville. Last spring, Dr. Blevins served as a BOE visitor to Northeastern (OK) State University. NCATE BOE visitors are usually required to serve on at least two teams per year, one normally in the fall and the other most often in the spring.

Additionally, Dr. Blevins also serves with the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) as an AECT NCATE folio reviewer. Schools with basic or advanced communications/educational technology programs which reside within a College of Education are required to gain program approval as part of the NCATE accreditation process. This attempt at program approval requires the folio process. The program is described at length through documentation and is reviewed by three separate reviewers who make recommendations to a chair, who then recommends to NCATE. Dr. Blevins also serves on a national committee that is now revising the AECT standards for NCATE. This process will continue through 1999. October 28, 1998
