In addition to federal 239 federal income tax returns, BSC VITA volunteers provided assistance with 248 state tax returns. Altogether, 275 area families received income tax preparation assistance through BSC VITA volunteers.
The BSC VITA volunteers offered free tax assistance throughout February, March, and April (until the April 15 filing deadline). "Volunteers alerted taxpayers to special credits and deductions," William Goodman, BSC associate professor of accounting, noted. "Our students enjoy the satisfaction of helping others, and many people find this service very meaningful because it helps them to complete their tax returns in a way that's comfortable for them."
"These students worked hard and made a great contribution to the College's relations with the community," Goodman observed. "They also put classroom skills to work in a 'real world'type environment."
